Periodontal disease is a progressive condition which begins with mild gum inflammation called gingivitis. If the disease is more advanced, a special periodontal cleaning called scaling and root planing, or deep cleaning, will be recommended. This procedure allows for tartar, plaque, and toxins to be removed from above and below the gum line and rough spots on root surfaces are smoothed. This procedure helps gum tissue to heal and pockets to shrink. Medications, special medicated mouth rinses, and an electric tooth brush may be recommended to help control infection and healing.
Our practice takes pride in offering periodontal laser surgery for patients that make for good candidates. This procedure is used for periodontal scaling, root planing, gum disease treatment and maintenance. We believe this form of periodontics is more comfortable, removes less tissue, and offers a better recovery time. If you think you may be a good candidate for periodontal laser treatment in Maplewood, we will take X-rays and offer a comprehensive exam to address your ailments.
In order to treat the periodontal disease, the root of the problem must be identified. If the disease is caught in the early stages of gingivitis, and no damage has been done, one to two regular cleanings will be recommended and you will also be given instructions on improving your daily oral hygiene habits and having regular dental cleanings.
